Order CARCHARHINIFORMES Compagno, 1973
Family CARCHARHINIDAE Jordan & Evermann, 1896

_________________________________________________________________________

Genus ABDOUNIA Cappetta, 1980
Abdounia minutissima (Winkler, 1873)
Early Eocene (Ypresian) of Egem (Belgium) where this species is particularly common. Characterized by a single pair of cusplets and on occasion the presence of short labio-basal folds.

Casier (1946) described Abdounia biauriculata from the Ypresian of Forest/Vorst in Belgium. From the same locality, Nolf (1988) figured a single specimen of Abdounia beaugei (Arambourg, 1935), originally described from the Ypresian of Morocco. Both morphologies seem to have coexisted in the Belgian Ypresian (Noubhani & Cappetta, 1997). However, it proved to be very difficult to clearly separate both. Abdounia biauriculata might represent a junior synonym of A. beaugei.

Abdounia biauriculata (Casier, 1946)
Early Eocene, Ypresian, Egem, Belgium.

Abdounia beaugei (Arambourg, 1935)

Abdounia recticona first occurred during deposition of the Egem Sands (not found in the clay underneath) and became very common in the Lutetian.
